BURLINGTON — Chief Michael Kent reports that the Burlington Police Department responded to a crash on Route 3A Sunday night where a sedan collided with a police cruiser.

At approximately 8:15 p.m., police responded to the area of 276 Cambridge St. (Route 3A) for a report of a crash.

Upon arrival, officers found that a 31-year-old Boston woman, driving a 2017 Nissan Altima, collided with a marked Burlington Police SUV being driven by a Burlington Police officer. The officer was on patrol in the area.

The sedan continued after the collision and went off the road and struck a commercial building. The building sustained damage and the town building inspector has been called to respond.

Both the driver and police officer were transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The initial investigation indicates that the officer was travelling on the northbound side of Route 3A when the woman, who was travelling south, crossed over into the opposite lane of traffic and collided with the officer’s SUV.

The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section has been called to the scene to conduct the investigation and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Route 3A will be closed while the scene remains active. Drivers are asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Burlington Police have set up detours to divert traffic from the area.
